TOP ISSUES

Residents and businesses in the Santa Clarita Valley are facing several key concerns regarding their water supply and usage, which are central to discussions in the community and are important issues in this upcoming elections.

Water Quality and Contamination

One of the most pressing concerns is water contamination, particularly with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which are man-made chemicals found in a variety of products. The Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency (SCV Water) has had to take significant measures to address this issue, including shutting down numerous wells and constructing one of California’s first PFAS treatment facilities. This is a critical issue as PFAS are linked to serious health risks, and the costs of treating this contamination are substantial.

Water Supply Reliability

Ensuring a reliable water supply is another major concern, particularly in the face of California's ongoing drought conditions. The SCV Water Agency is working to manage water supplies more effectively, including through projects like the State Water Project, which recently increased water allocations. However, balancing the needs of a growing population with the limitations of water availability remains a challenge.

Infrastructure and Maintenance

The need for ongoing maintenance and upgrades to water infrastructure is a significant issue. The SCV Water Agency's strategic plan emphasizes the importance of maintaining and improving infrastructure to ensure sustainable water delivery. This includes everything from storage tanks to pipelines, which require constant attention to prevent issues and ensure long-term reliability.

Financial Resiliency and Rate Changes

With the increasing costs associated with water treatment and infrastructure improvements, there is concern over potential rate increases. Ensuring financial resiliency while keeping water rates affordable for residents and businesses is a delicate balance that the SCV Water Agency needs to manage carefully.

Environmental Stewardship

Lastly, there is a growing focus on environmental stewardship, with the community expecting the SCV Water Agency to manage resources sustainably. This includes water conservation efforts, efficient use of resources, and protecting local ecosystems from the impacts of water management practices.
